Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and Root Planing (deep cleaning) is a procedure that can effectively remove hardened plaque around the tooth and gumline to prevent Periodontal Disease.
It is usually done in two sessions.
Why Do I Need Scaling and Root Planing?
Sometimes, when teeth are neglected for some time, excessive dental plaque accumulates around the teeth. This plaque in time gets very hard and usually deposits itself around the gum line. Bacteria proliferate in the plaque. With bacteria present, the body tries to fight against it and in doing that, the gums become irritated and inflamed resulting in gaps (pockets) between the gums and teeth. This condition in its beginning is known as Gingivitis and in its extreme form is known as Periodontal Disease, or Gum Disease
Gingivitis and Periodontal disease aren't painful. Some patients are unaware they have it for a long time and only experience some sensitivity or shifting of their teeth.
If Gingivitis goes untreated Periodontal Disease sets in. The gums start receding, exposing the root and reducing the bone as a result of the inflammatory response. The tooth/teeth may get very loose and at that point would need to be extracted. Sometimes is necessary to be treated by a Dentist Specialist in Gums called a Periodontist
Periodontal Disease and Gingivitis are preventable and treatable. Routine dental cleanings and check-ups with the dentist ,together with good oral hygiene habits are key in keeping your teeth and gums healthy.
